Great Ormond Street Hospital Welcomes Stig and Sten
The Children’s Hospital School at Great Ormond Street Hospital is brightening up children’s hospital stays by using EducationCity.com.
EducationCity.com is the leading teaching, learning and assessment resource, which is used in over 12,000 schools
worldwide, and accessed online over the Internet. It includes activities, Topic Tools, offline worksheets, a mental maths arena called Play Live, and Maths Tests, all of which are delivered in a fun, interactive way with the help of EducationCity.com’s characters, Stig, Sten, Klara and Manu.
At the end of 2009, the hospital school ran a special EducationCity.com-based Numeracy workshop to encourage the children to get hands-on with the resource. The children who attended, ranged from 5 to 10 years of age, and enjoyed a whole range of interactive activities, covering topics such as measurement and days of the week.
The session was run by teacher Carol Raeburn and her teaching assistant Kate Larsen, and you couldn’t get a more enthusiastic advocate of the resource than Kate. “EducationCity.com”, she raved, “is really useful for us, particularly when teaching children of different ages. It’s just brilliant for differentiating.”
“And the children love it. They can’t wait to get on it at the earliest opportunity and when given their task, dive straight in, clearly engaged in, and motivated by, the content.”

Access to the resource is a real boost to the setting, because many of the children are already familiar with it, having used it at school. And because the children’s teachers back at home can specify exactly which activities they would like them to cover, they can ensure the activities they do, fit in with what the pupil would be learning outside the hospital.
This view was fully endorsed by John Sosna, Assistant Head: ICT and e-Learning, who couldn’t say enough positive things about EducationCity.com. "It’s inviting, motivating and stimulating”, he enthused. “We’ve only had positive feedback from teachers and children who have used it. It works really well in our setting and none of us would be without it now!”
