Modern Foreign Languages

Early Years (6-7 years old)

The goal in the Early Years activities is to create curiosity and excitement about a foreign language. Students will become aware of the sounds of the new language, and realize that they are different from the sounds of their mother tongue, and that, despite the difference in sounds, the foreign language holds meaning in exactly the way that their mother tongue does.  Eventually, they will embrace the possibility of understanding and speaking the language themselves.

This awareness will be achieved through singing along with nursery rhymes in the target language. All activity songs can be sung karaoke-style (with text, audio toggle on/off).  Once basic awareness has been achieved, a very basic vocabulary can be introduced, by using a few targeted words. Ultimately, the link between the word and its meaning should be reinforced with the use of the activities, activity sheets and provided lesson plans and teacher notes.

Older Years (7- 13 years old)

The approach of the Modern Foreign Language module is to teach the language and introduce the culture through immersion in the target language, with the use of native voices, traditional music, popular national festivities and cultural symbols.

The activities provide an opportunity to hear real speakers and interact in an environment that is immersed in the target language. Each activity tells a new story that is engaging and full of different characters, dialogue and content.  The students will learn vocabulary about specific topics, and how to use these words in order to communicate their own thoughts and opinions. In the activities they can practice their newly acquired vocabulary in a fun and engaging way.

Listening and pronunciation is an important factor in our content. All text has auditory support in order to assist the assimilation of the sounds of the language.

The activities come equipped with a Learn Area and an activity sheet. The Learn Area presents the language content for the activity. It can be used by the learner independently as preparation for the activity. It can also be used by the teacher for whole class lesson delivery on the whiteboard. This area can also be used for consolidation and revision of the topic area at any stage in the learning process.

The activity sheets provide an excellent opportunity to reinforce literacy skills and language learning strategies. They can either fit into a lesson, or be taken home as homework in order to extend the language learning out of the school.
