You will need to subscribe to the Homework module for students to use the subscription from home. Students then login via www.EducationCity.com using their homework logins.

Students shouldn’t be given the school’s login details, nor should they be displayed within the school building. Pupils login in either via the AutoLogin, or through individual login if you have that set up in your school.

You’ll need to set up AutoLogin in your school; this is a shortcut that students simply double click to access your subscription. You can place the AutoLogin on computer desktops, a password-protected VLE, or similar.

You can download a step by step guide in a PDF by right clicking on here and saving to your desktop. If you are still having problems with this then please call our Customer Services team on 0844 225 3060.

No.

The login details are for the sole use of teachers only. Please use the AutoLogin feature to enable pupils to access EducationCity.com directly from the desktop. This removes the need for them to log in each time.

Please note, only teachers are allowed to access the resource out of school using the schools login details.

Teachers are entitled to access EducationCity.com at home for lesson planning and to monitor pupil progress.

Yes, absolutely. We would recommend the myCity feature.

A teacher can select Demo Class > Demo Pupil to both look at an activity and model how to play to pupils. Entering an activity in this way will mean that your SuccessTracker data will not be affected.

EducationCity.com has a handy feature called the Curriculum Map.

The Curriculum Map makes selecting the right activity easy, as it matches the objective you want to cover to the activity that addresses it. As well as being readily available on-screen, the Curriculum Maps are print-friendly, so can be printed out if required.

At the bottom of the activity select page you can see buttons for the curriculum strands, with an i icon next to each. Click on the i icon. The Curriculum Map will then be displayed for the area of interest, as below, giving you all the objective with activities that cover this area, as well as information on the activity content and a link to its Teacher Zone.

You can also click on the Topic Filter button in the top right of the activity page and choose from the topics covered in the subject curriculum for that year/level.

We have a handy user guide on the product in Teacher Area: Teacher Features: Curriculum Map.

You can change the setting for each tool. Click on the button for settings - this can either have the word settings on it, or a spanner icon.

Within the tool towards the top left will be a button either with a question mark icon or the word help. Clicking that will open a tutorial giving an overview of the functionality of the tool.

Next to the button for each tool is an i icon. Click onto that and a Curriculum Map will open. On the right side you will see a light bulb in a purple circle. That opens a guide giving suggestions for classroom use.

Within your school, yes. All teachers can access content that has been saved into the Topic Tools.

Yes, most tools have the Save & Open feature. Use the disc icon to save (you’ll need your feature password to access this) and the folder icon to open.

One of the requirements to use EducationCity.com is Flash. Unfortunately, Apple has chosen not to allow the use of Flash on both the iPad and iPhone so EducationCity.com will not work on either device.

EducationCity.com uses Flash as it is the most advanced and effective way to create web animations and there have been no real alternatives to this in the market.

The problem with Flash content on iPhones and iPads obviously frustrates many users of EducationCity.com as well as users of many other sites. While we can't predict how the issue will resolve in the long term, we're constantly reviewing our product, how it's presented, and the range of technology that can be used to access the site on various operating systems and products.

We really hope that Apple will change their mind and start to support Flash once again. In the meantime there are lots of systems that do support Flash. Both Windows 7 and Android 2.2, do support Flash, so the growing number of alternative tablet and phone devices are able to use EducationCity.com directly on them without the need of a special application.

Further technical information - Flash v HTML 5

While we try to adhere to Internet standards and guidelines, which does not yet include HTML5, our understanding is that it's still in development, and our expectation would be that until it's properly adopted as a standard by the wider industry, and has a significant user base, then EducationCity.com is likely to continue to use technologies such as Flash and the older HTML standards to present its content.

Support for HTML5 is very dependent on browser technology.  We have found that most sites support some of the functionality, but that it varies from one browser to another, and that a site that supports one part of HTML5 does not work on other browsers.

We have also found that HTML5 does not yet offer the functionality or interactivity required to support most of the EducationCity.com games - which suggests that it may not be the whole answer.

Example of video formats supported by HTML 5

Format IE Firefox Opera Chrome Safari
Ogg No 3.5 + 10.5 + 5.0 + No
MPEG 4 9.0 + No No 5.0+ 3.0+
WebM No 4.0+ 10.6+ 6.0+ No
  • Ogg = Ogg files with Theora video codec and Vorbis audio codec
  • MPEG4 = MPEG 4 files with H.264 video codec and AAC audio codec
  • WebM = WebM files with VP8 video codec and Vorbis audio codec

Example of audio elements supported by HTML 5

Format IE Firefox Opera Chrome Safari
Ogg Vorbis No Yes Yes Yes No
MPEG 4 Yes No No Yes Yes
WebM No Yes Yes Yes Yes

As you can see no one format is supported on any of the main browsers.
