PlayLive - the mental maths arena

What’s PlayLive?

Play Live, the online maths game designed to develop and increase pupils’ speed and skill at answering mental maths questions. PlayLive logo

Pupils have 60 seconds to answer as many mental arithmetic questions as they can as fast as they can. This enables pupils to pitch their mathematical knowledge against others of a similar age, within a timed, competitive environment.

Who Plays?

To play this interactive learning game, pupils simply log on and the computer randomly selects another pupil for them to play against who could be from any school in the UK.

How does it work?

All pupils are shown the same questions and they answer them at their own pace. The winner is the person who gets most questions right within the allocated 60 seconds. Pupils are allowed up to two incorrect answers; on their third incorrect answer the game is terminated.

What is the question content?

The content targets the respective level a pupil is working at and supports them depending on their year group (KS1 Maths, KS2 Maths and SEN). Pupils are given a series of mental maths questions to answer using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Play Live is a great resource for teaching mental maths. It is a versatile tool that can be used in lots of ways in the classroom:

  • It is a great alternative to regular mental maths or tables tests.
  • To follow up an activity for specific learning objectives.
  • To incorporate into a challenge area designed to develop children’s thinking.
  • Pupils can be set challenges e.g., 'How many multiplication and division calculations can you answer in 60 seconds today?'
  • It can be used during Golden Time.
