6 Resources for Teaching Lessons on Forces & Magnets

Learning about forces and magnets is really interesting and great fun – forces are all around us and affect everything we do, and magnets are used every day all over the world. Let’s check out some fun facts about forces and magnets…

  1. Gravity is a type of force that pulls things towards the centre of the Earth.
  2. Magnets attract a few metals like iron and nickel but won’t attract metals such as copper and gold.
  3. When you put a bar magnet under a sheet of paper and sprinkle iron powder lightly on top of it, you’ll see the invisible magnetic field as the particles stick to it.

So… magnets and forces are pretty cool, right?

Now let’s find out about some of the ways you can learn about them with EducationCity. We’ve pulled together a list of Activities and Learn Screens for Key Stage 2 on magnets and forces which are all in our Science module.

Activities

Box Carts – To investigate which surface will slow an object down the most.

  • England: Year 3 & 5
  • Scotland: Second *
  • Wales: Year 4
  • N. Ireland: P6

Opposites Attract – Investigate magnets to learn that they repel and attract each other and that this result is based on their poles.

  • England: Year 3
  • Scotland: First **
  • Wales: Year 3
  • N. Ireland: P3

Speed Bumps Game – Explore friction by changing a track’s surface materials and the effect such surfaces have on a car’s motion and ability to climb hills.

  • England: Year 3 & 5
  • Scotland: Second *
  • Wales: Year 4

Box Carts – Reinforcing that liquids, gases and solids change their state when subjected to a change in temperature.

Learn Screens

Gear oh Gear – Explore how gears allow a smaller force to have a greater effect.Science Resource
