Developing Students’ Reading Comprehension

Practising reading comprehension in lessons helps students to perceive and understand the meanings communicated by texts, and supports reading development.

To give you a helping hand, we’ve pulled together some suggested EducationCity KS1 and KS2 (or your region’s equivalent) Activities, that will support your students’ in understanding different texts better.

KS1Reading Comprehension

A Day in the Park: #25756 – Read extracts from the story and answer the questions.

The Big City: #25780 – Use sentence-level context as a clue to the meaning of a word or phrase.

Canopy Clues: #13214 – Use clues to identify and understand unknown words.

Wild River: #27680 – Children answer who, what, when, where, why and how questions about events in a story as well as answering inference questions.

KS2

In Character: #1808 – Read fictional passages. Identify and describe main characters’ traits, motivations and feelings.

Fact Finder: #12369 – Explore the issue of school expansion through reading a range of texts.

Timeless Tales: #13312 – Consider the features of the legend of Robin Hood and its underlying themes.

Skateboard Whiz: #793 – Locate/recall information from a text, ‘The History of Skateboarding’.
