Rhyme them Lines – What a competition!

On behalf our judges – an expert panel of educationalists and producers – we would like to extend want our congratulations to everyone who entered our poetry competition. All the entries were of such a high standard that we really did struggle to pick a top three. The most enjoyable of all was seeing the sheer variety of entries. We were so impressed with everyone’s high level of imagination and clever use of words.

Here's our top three poems!

  1. Dedication by Robert from St John's CE Primary School – the overall winner.

Dedication was chosen for its flow, expression, honesty and realism. It also reminded the judges of 'Charge of the Light Brigade' by Tennyson, and they were interested to know if this was or was not intentional.

  1. Kenya's Heroine by Sanaa, Jaffery Academy

Kenya's Heroine was a really strong contender – with a great message.

  1. Aching Bones by Reed, Marshgate Primary School.

Aching Bones was a curious little poem, with lots of quite clever and silly humour in it. The final few lines as a round off at the end were a great idea

Apart from the top three, the particular highlights included a poem called ‘Numbers’ which describes how confusing maths and numbers can be (something we can all definitely relate to!) and a poem called ‘Thinking About Others’, which draws attention to social issues and the importance of thinking about the wider world. Our message to everyone who entered and to anyone else interested in poetry is to keep on writing!

We will be publishing the shortlisted poems very soon so you can share the enjoyment we had in reading them.
